At Upendo Friends School, we believe that education is not only about books, classrooms, and exams—it is also about teaching compassion, responsibility, and the value of community. In 2025, our students and staff came together for a small but deeply meaningful act of kindness: helping an elderly grandmother in our neighborhood with warm blankets.
A Golden Blessing in Our Community
This grandmother, affectionately known as “Bibi”, is a living blessing to our community. She represents wisdom, resilience, and the dignity of our elders. Recognizing her needs, our school family began seeking ways to bring her comfort. As we often say, “Baraka kwa bibi zinatafutwa kila kona”—the blessings of caring for our grandmother can be found everywhere.
From One Blanket to Four
Thanks to the generosity of our school community and supportive friends, we were able to provide Bibi with not one, but four blankets. Two had already been purchased earlier, and two more were added this year. With four blankets, she now has enough to stay warm and comfortable, with the added benefit of rotating them.
Monthly Care: More Than Just Blankets
Our plan is simple but heartfelt:
- Every month, Bibi will receive a fresh, clean blanket.
- Our students and volunteers will take turns washing and caring for the blankets.
- Through this routine, we are not only ensuring her comfort but also teaching our learners about service, humility, and respect for elders.
Gratitude and Appreciation
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, especially the generous hearts who made this initiative possible. “Asante sana dada”—thank you so much, sister—for your selfless support. Your act of kindness is a true example of what it means to live with love.
Lessons Beyond the Classroom
For our students, this act is more than charity—it is a lesson in life. By caring for Bibi, they learn the importance of empathy, responsibility, and community service. These lessons are just as valuable as mathematics, literature, or science, for they shape character and nurture compassion.
Moving Forward
At Upendo Friends School, we plan to continue such initiatives, ensuring that our learners not only grow intellectually but also morally and spiritually. Small acts of kindness, such as giving a blanket, remind us that we can make a difference in someone’s life.
Final Thought
One blanket may seem small, but when multiplied by love and care, it becomes a symbol of hope and warmth. Today, Bibi rests peacefully under her blankets, and we as a community rest knowing we have done something meaningful.
Together, we are not just a school—we are a family.
